Before you take on paying clients in New Zealand, it's worth knowing what's required and what clients and gyms expect. This guide covers the basics. Always confirm details with the official body, as rules change.
Registration
- New Zealand has no government licence for personal trainers. REPs NZ (the New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals) is the main industry register, and many facilities ask for it.
- REPs NZ registration needs a recognised qualification, such as the New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4) for personal trainers, plus a current first aid certificate.
Insurance
- Public liability and professional indemnity insurance are standard for self-employed trainers.
- Some councils require permission for commercial fitness activity in parks. Check with your local council.
